The Apology (7/22/18)
03:31
|
|||
v1:
sometimes the best cliches turn out to be true
you're put to the test and you fail, even though you knew what to do
and I've got 2 good eyes
but they failed to realize
ch:
so this is my apology for everything that went wrong
you must have known you'd get one
did you think it would take so damn long
I don't want to take the blame
but I'll take it just the same
this is my apology
v2:
sometimes the best laid plans just weren't meant to be
I took all the rest of your dreams and scattered them to sea
and I've got 2 good ears
but they failed when you were near
ch:
so this is my apology for everything that went wrong
you must have known you'd get one
did you think it would take so damn long
I don't want to take the blame
but I'll take it just the same
this is my apology
br:
goodnight, darling
another over & out
so long, sweetheart
you were warned a million times
oh, how I tried
I let you down
I let you down
ch:
so this is my apology for everything that went wrong
you must have known you'd get one
did you think it would take so damn long
I don't want to take the blame
but I'll take it just the same
this is my apology
this is my apology
this is my apology

v1:
There are days when you don't know who you are
There are times when you feel the need to run so far
Away from here, or you might try to hide
Just don't plan to spend your whole life locked inside
ch:
It's time to get out, feel the warmth on your skin
Jump and shout, if you're ready to begin
It's never enough just to let the sunshine in
You've got to let the sunshine win
v2:
When you're low or maybe somewhere in between
The fact & fiction of a life you've only seen
You might feel like you're walking on a wire
But that's the only way to soar higher & higher
ch:
It's time to get out, feel the warmth on your skin
Jump and shout, if you're ready to begin
It's never enough just to let the sunshine in
You've got to let the sunshine win
br:
If the sun shines fully on your face
That's he one time you won't feel out of place
ch:
It's time to get out, feel the warmth on your skin
Jump and shout, if you're ready to begin
It's never enough just to let the sunshine in
---
ch:
It's time to get out, feel the warmth on your skin
Jump and shout, if you're ready to begin
It's never enough just to let the sunshine in
You've got to let the sunshine win
Let the sunshine win
Let the sunshine win

At My Age (8/11/18)
02:41
|
|||
v1:
You're never too old
You're never too old to learn a lesson
If you only try
Don't believe what you're told
You're never too old to find some magic
No need to ask why
ch:
At my age, I should speak kinder
Breath deeper
Think sweeter thoughts
I'm planning for 100, but who knows where it ends
At my age, I should know better
So why do I always keep forgetting
At my age, I could use a few more friends
v2:
If you wanna come clean
Just say what you mean
No need to be ashamed, no need for tears
Doesn't matter where you've been
Just do what you can to make the best
Of what we've got
These last few years
ch:
At my age, I should speak kinder
Breath deeper
Think sweeter thoughts
I'm planning for 100, but who knows where it ends
At my age, I should know better
So why do I always keep forgetting
At my age, I could use a few more friends
ch:
At my age, I should speak kinder
Breath deeper
Think sweeter thoughts
I'm planning for 100, but who knows where it ends
At my age, I should know better
So why do I always keep forgetting
At my age, I could use a few more friends
At my age, I could use a few more friends

Sow the Seeds (6/18/18)
02:37
|
|||
v1:
I cursed my brother on the highway
He didn't keep up my speed
Even though he was going my way
Somehow I felt the need
To ruin his day, and while I was at it,
I took a shot at mine
Yeah, I really let him have it
Had to keep us in line
ch:
Would it kill us to show some civility
'Cause it seems we've lost the ability
To love out neighbors, at least the ones who don't look like we do
We'll answer later, but I don't think that's what Jesus would do
v2:
We only love the ones
That love us right back
We're sticking to our guns
We've really got a knack
Of holding tight to our agendas
And building up our walls
I think it's time that we should end this
Before we lose it all
ch:
Would it kill us to show some civility
'Cause it seems like we've lost the ability
To love out neighbors, at least the ones who don't think like we do
We'll answer later, but I don't think that's what Jesus would do
br:
I don't think that our dialogue lifts up our fellow man
Are we loving each other the best that we can?
And are these verbal slings & arrows part of our God-forsaken plan?
v3:
We go to church every Sunday
Or at least for 3 of 4
They say Jesus will come back someday
Can't imagine what for
We pick the parts of the story
That tend to suit our needs
We get carried away in glory
But we're too lazy to sow the seeds
|
||||
5. |
||||
v1:
I always feel a little lost when I walk around the room
I see the pic on the floor and the mic on the boom
Brings to mind the sound of triumph and sometimes tragedy
Brings to mind the sound of everything that somehow had to be
v2:
I'm home when the clock on the wall says it's time to cross the line
Now that I know where it is, I can cross it every time
Brings to mind the sound of the future and glimpses of the past
Brings to mind the time I thought that I could make it last
Make it last
Make it last
Make it last
ch:
Home is where the art is
Its where the love is always getting started
It's the place where you can try to reclaim your youth
Home is sometimes fleeting
It's not a thing that you can try to reel in
It's a good space to rehearse your truth
v3:
Locked out of what you think might get you in the race
If you crawl too far, you'll fade out with the flames
Brings to mind the sound of winter calling you to run
Brings to mind the saints & sinners, clutching the starting gun
The starting gun
The starting gun
The starting gun
ch:
Home is where the art is
Its where the love is always getting started
It's the place where you can try to reclaim your youth
Home is sometimes fleeting
It's not a thing that you can try to reel in
It's a good space to rehearse your truth
It's a good space to rehearse your truth

Lose My Sight (8/26/18)
02:53
|
|||
v1:
I think I'll probably lose my sight before I lose my life
I know I'll make it into heaven in spite of all the ways I've tried
To screw it up and sabotage the gifts that I've been given
I'll pour out all my life's regrets like a bottle of good bourbon
ch:
We're all in this together
Don't fool yourself, it's not now or never
We take our chances before we come to our senses
Life ain't got no plot twists, just a string of coincidences
v2:
I know I need to lose it all before I gain my life
I read it somewhere in a book, but it doesn't seem quite right
I've had my doubts, I've had my loves, they vanish day to day
Sometimes I think I've had enough, but I keep on anyway
ch:
We're all in this together
Don't fool yourself, it's not now or never
We take our chances before we come to our senses
Life ain't got no plot twists, just a string of coincidences
v3:
I think I'll probably lose my sight before I lose my life
I know I'll make it into heaven in spite of all the days I've lied
ch:
We're all in this together
Don't fool yourself, it's not now or never
We take our chances before we come to our senses
Life ain't got no plot twists
-------
We're all in this together

The Rebound (7/8/18)
02:12
|
|||
She said I’m just a ghost digging holes for a grave I’ll never use
Won’t put the shovel down, tell me what’s your excuse
The hallway lined with photographs & posters leaves a clear path for the door
The animal inside her leads her crawling ‘cross the floor
Got a bag full of makeup & pills doesn’t know what for
Retreat seems the better choice, but forward is the only way she knows
She’s got the maps & legends, she follows where the wind blows
I start the judgements early, but I suppose
We all fall hard
Sometimes we stay down
She’s got the courage to wait
Wait for the rebound
In 2 days she lived for 7 weeks or maybe even more
“I don’t think that Jesus wants to help me fight this war“
Can’t seem to figure her out, but I know for sure
We all fall hard
Sometimes we stay down
She’s got the courage to wait
Wait for the rebound
|
||||
8. |
||||
v1:
It's 7am, it's raining again
But not just any rain, it's like Chicago in the movies
Before the lights go on, before it all goes wrong
She can't shake the thought, a moment of sudden beauty
pre:
They locked arms and skipped the sidewalk fantastic
ch:
They were crazy in the same way
Rarely crazy on the same day
Lots of love to give away
Lots of love to keep inside
-----
Their language was always artful
Mercy, they had a heart-full
Took all the passion they could marshal
Spread it out from time to time
From the start to the finish line
v2:
Call it sometime around noon, call it shooting for the moon
But someone leaves too soon and then it's over
Sometimes the sun burns hot, you try to give it all you've got
You never think you'll get caught, a postcard Casanova
pre:
They locked arms and skipped the sidewalk fantastic
ch:
They were crazy in the same way
Rarely crazy on the same day
Lots of love to give away
Lots of love to keep inside

Their language was always artful

9. |
||||
v1:
At the end of the day, when I'm feeling abused
I might get a bit angry, if I'm telling you true
I sometimes feel let down by the things that you do
But I won't let my feelings drag me to ruin
ch:
No, I'll forgive you, baby
But only 'cause I know that it drives you crazy
I'll forgive you again & again
'Cause letting it go is the best revenge
v2:
I'm beat up and shot down and dragged to the curb
I beg you in protest, but you don't hear a word
I just can't believe all the things that I've heard
But I want to feel better, so here's what I've learned
ch:
That I'll forgive you, baby
But only 'cause I know that it drives you crazy
I'll forgive you again & again
'Cause letting it go is the best revenge
br:
It's like dumping hot coals on the top of your head
Might make you think twice 'bout the things that you've said
Now I could get mad, but I think instead
ch:
That I'll forgive you, baby
But only 'cause I know that it drives you crazy
I'll forgive you again & again
'Cause letting it go, letting it go
ch:
That I'll forgive you, baby
But only 'cause I know that it drives you crazy
I'll forgive you again & again
'Cause letting you go is the best revenge

Waco, TX 1948 (7/30/18)
02:21

|||
v1:
Nothing to lose, nothing to gain
Round & round, until only the joy remains
All hope is lost, all hope is found
We only know it's good to be standing on solid ground
pre:
We sit and wait for your return

Before we spoke, before we lied
The fire was burning so deep inside
Whatever comes, whatever goes
Whatever happened to the man that everybody knows

Nothing ever happens in this God-forsaken place
Until they turned out the lights and opened up the gates
In Waco, TX 1948

Until the last dog has his day
Until the last priest & poet run out of things to say
We'll count our cards, we'll count our luck
We'll count out time until we realize how low that we've sunk

We sit and wait for your return

v1:
Ain’t no shame in being ground down
Ain’t no blame to give the runaround
If you’re looking for a answer,
you should probably take it downtown
v2:
Don’t be worried ‘bout the doorways
If you hurry through the long days
You just might think it’s here to stay,
but it’s really just a passing phase
ch:
And we stumble through the play, unrehearsed
We mumble through the lines, chapter and verse
They tell us we’re the greatest, but we’re closer to the worst
v3:
When you close your eyes to sleep away
When you run to find the new day
Don't you stop to look inside yourself,
You're better off when you learn to pray
v4:
Lock the doors so you can feel safe
Start some wars so you can sow hate
If you plan to climb up on the cross,
are you sure that you can bear the weight
ch:
And we wander through the play, unrehearsed
We ponder all the lines, chapter and verse
They tell us we’re blessed, but we’re closer to the curse
Closer to the curse
v5:
Ain't no shame in hearing no sound
You take the blame for being ground down

Touch Down (3/4/18)
02:24
|
|||
He had a coffin made by murderers as he laid to rest
Not just one, but his & hers, when she follows next
Li di di di di
---
A boat made of paper as he floats to the sea
The people all stop & stare while he sails in the breeze
Li di di di di
And when we touch down
On the world where we'll live now
We'll blend with the clouds
And hide underground
He had a strange view of the world and the people he saw
Their hearts would sometimes turn to the pictures he'd drawn
Li di di di di
And when we touch down
On the world where we'll live now
We'll blend with the clouds
And hide underground
-- some sort of solo --
He had a coffin made by murderers as he laid to rest

Eureka (12/3/18)
02:46
|
|||
v1:
Her face paints a picture that everyone knows
One side a ghost, the other a rose
A smile as wide as the deep blue sea
Why does she keep on hiding from me?
v2:
Her eyes burn like fire, her hair flows like rain
A body that even God wouldn't tame
Legs as long as a mid-summer's day
Why does she keep on running away?
ch:
Eureka, I found her, no love can surround her
She dreams a new dream before vanishing in air
Eureka don't want me, but she sure likes to haunt me
I reach out to touch her, but no one is there
v3:
She thinks that her love might go unreturned
That's a hard lesson that we never learn
A drop at the bottom of the deepest well
The sunlight through the window of the darkest cell
ch:
Eureka, I found her, no love can surround her
She dreams a new dream before vanishing in air
Eureka don't want me, but she sure likes to haunt me
I reach out to touch her, but no one is there

full of deceit, deception, abuse
Eureka, my darlin', you sure are a hard one...
to figure out, to figure the truth

Her face paints a picture that everyone knows
One side a ghost, the other a rose

Save from the silence

Don't have to speak
6 days a week
Just have to play
Sing the days away
